BIM as-built modeling of architecture and structure through laser scanning
The Assignment
We were commissioned to carry out the BIM digitization of 4 reference schools in Catalonia (Bellvitge, Casp, Clot, and Infant Jesús) to have updated documentation of their heritage. Multiple interventions and expansions make it necessary to have an updated and updatable BIM model of their buildings.
The main particularity when modeling the Jesuïtes Sant Gervasi – Infant Jesús school was the church. Its complex geometry, especially inside, made its 3D survey a real challenge The laser scanning was also very complex since the interior of the church has now been converted into classrooms, making it difficult to interpret the original volume.
BIM Project:
The BIM digitization process is the one we usually do: we start with a laser scan to later carry out the BIM modeling of the building’s architecture. This survey allows us to extract a lot of useful information for the client: surfaces, number and types of classrooms, students per classroom, etc.
The main challenge of the project was the laser scanning process. It had to be carried out during a few national holidays days, so as not coincide with the school calendar. Nearly 60.000 m2 were scanned in just 5/6 days. It was about 80 hours in a week of work, but the challenge was worth it.
The laser scanning was made with two types of equipment: the Leica RTC360, for the facades and the communication cores, and the Leica BLK2Go, for the rest of the complex. This second equipment allows you to scan a building in 3D while walking. The best way to capture the maximum surface in the shortest possible time.
